Umwirondoro109 Kastamonu at Kale.jpg
English: One of some pictures taken at the castle. From it one has great views, that I put into another category. Kale is Turkish for fortress, castle. On top there was a couple of cannon, a flag, a tomb and a tea-garden. I would not be surprised if that has grown since my last visit.
The castle stands on the highest point of the city ay about 120 meters above the city. The castle, located on a bedrock in the west of the city, was built by the Komnenos in the 12th century AD. Only the inner castle part has survived from the original building today. The outer walls of the castle were destroyed in the late 18th century. The changes that the castle went through in various periods caused it to reflect Turkish architecture rather than a medieval Byzantine structure.
